Kit Carruthers, a young garbage collector and his girlfriend Holly Sargis from Fort Dupree, South Dakota, are on the run after killing Holly's father who disagreed with their relationship. On their way towards the Badlands of Montana they leave a trail of dispassionate and seemingly random murders. A very intriguing narrative without judgements, and lacking the usually sensational approach of this genre. Very good acting and directing, and beautiful photography. The script was based upon the true story of the Charles Starkweather and Caril-Ann Fugate murders in 1958.





Terrence Malick's debut feature, an effortlessly cool take on a real-life 1950s case, stars a denim-clad Martin Sheen as rebel without a cause Kit Carruthers. Kit shoots dead the obstinate father of his teenage girlfriend Holly (Sissy Spacek), and the pair go on the run in the bleak - but under Malick's painterly eye, strangely beautiful - Dakota Badlands. Kit kills several more times as the police net closes around them.

With superbly chosen musical accompaniment by Carl Orff, among others, and wonderful cinematography, "Badlands" is firmly rooted in the tradition of the anti-heroic American road movie (thematically related movies that spring to mind include "Bonnie and Clyde", "Vanishing Point", "Sugarland Express", "Thelma and Louise", "Natural Born Killers"). But as ever Malick's poetic vision ensures that his movie thoroughly transcends the genre in which he is working. "Badlands" is simultaneously a celebration of the infinite horizon of the American road, and a chilling depiction of psychopathology in action. Kit wins you over with his considerable charm before it dawns that there is a void in his soul that enables him to kill with impunity. Sheen is outstanding in this iconic role, and Spacek just as good: she's quietly heartbreaking as the immature, fragile girl who is as unable to comprehend the implications of Kit's actions as Kit himself. Her narrative of the events as they unfold is devastatingly naive, unintentionally ironic and disturbingly funny.

Some audiences may find Malick's work cold and dispassionate because he treats the mundane and the extraordinary with the same detachment, but it's a detachment that, for me, signals Malick's passionate engagement with everything that happens, so that every single event is laden with significance, whether it is the movement of a beetle on a stalk of grass, or the killing of a man. Malick does not thereby condone Kit's violence or Holly's passive association with it, but by refraining from prosaic moralising he gives the viewer the space to respond to these characters in his/her own way, thus generating a far more unsettling experience. Kit decide dejar atrás su vida mediocre cuando conoce a Holly. Deseando triunfar por todos los medios, mata accidentalmente al padre de Holly, desencadenando a partir de ese momento una serie de trágicos sucesos.

Considerada por muchos la mejor ópera prima del cine moderno, Badlands, la primer película del mítico Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line) es ostensiblemente un relato semi-factual de un asesino serial y de su novia, en los años 50. Lo que inmediatamente llama la atención del film de Malick es su evidente falta de interés en tratar de explicar las motivaciones homicidas de los protagonistas. Más aún, su absoluta falta de juzgamiento moral o de la cultura que los produjo. En cambio, el film se focaliza en su experiencia de alienación del mundo cotidiano en el que viven y de sus valores. Como diría Heidegger, la inteligibilidad del mundo y los valores que la gente comparte son, en última instancia, ni justificados ni antojadizos. Son hechos dados, ni basados en fundamentos inamovibles ni en consensos arbitrarios.





La balade sauvage

Si le titre en français La balade sauvage nous prépare d'emblée à une histoire violente, le titre en anglais Badlands nous invite plutôt à une visite touristique de cette région de l'ouest américain.

(Attention : la jaquette du DVD titre la Ballade Sauvage mais le titre original du film est bien la Balade Sauvage avec un seul l).

Basé sur une histoire vraie, ce sont souvent celles qui font les meilleurs scénarios, le film La balade sauvage, ou Badlands je préfère, nous raconte la rencontre et la fuite désespérée de 2 jeunes tueurs en série à la fin des années 50, Charles Starkweather et Caril Fugate, âgés respectivement de 19 et 14 ans au moment des faits.

Kit (Martin Sheen) est éboueur et méprisé de tous, Holly (Sissy Spacek) est collégienne et seule. Il se donne le look James Dean, elle porte des robes à froufrou et des socquettes blanches. Mais quand le père apprend leur relation et s'y oppose, Kit le tue, tout simplement. C'est le début d'une errance, et ceux qui ont le malheur de croiser leur route sont froidement assassinés (11 en huit jours). Road movie à travers le Dakota et les Badlands (désert du Montana), où la beauté des paysages, la poésie des images (construction d'une superbe cabane en bois dans un arbre) et le romantisme (scène de slow dans la nuit) vont contraster avec les tueries qui pour eux ne semblent pas plus importantes que boire ou se nourrir, mais nécessaires à leur existence.

Badlands, film à tout petit budget, tourné en 16 jours et considéré aux US comme un classique, est merveilleusement interprété par Martin Sheen (Kit), plein de charme et de gentillesse envers Holly, mais détaché de la réalité, et Sissy Spacek, encore petite fille qui ne semble pas comprendre ce qui lui arrive.
